Recognising North Korea
Sir, — No one could accuse the present Government of approving of the Marxists in Angola, and yet New Zealand has just recognised the Luanda Government that has been in existence barely three weeks. In his announcement, Mr Muldoon made it clear that diplomatic recognition is not confused with political approval by his Government. This suggests that New Zealand should recognise the Government of the Democratic; People’s Republic of Korea! (North Korea), which has effectively governed 15 million people in Northern Korea for three decades. Sweden, Australia, and several other Western countries already have diplomatic relations with the D.P.R.K., so Iwe will hardly be alone if we do so. We would, however, be contributing to peace in the area, and we would then be able to develop the kinds of trade and cultural exchange that have already resulted from our relations with China. — Yours, etc.,
W. E. WILLMOTT. Chairman. N.Z. - D.P.R.K. Society. February 25, 1976.
