Shooting inquiry demanded
<.XZ. Frr.'S Assuciatiot. 4| WELLINGTON. 3 The New Zealand Council . for Civil Liberties has called JI for a public inquiry into the shooting of Daniel Houpapa !lin Taumarunui on January 4 In a statement, the chattMr W. D. Rose, said the r ' circumstances warranted a ! fuller investigation than 'lwould be forthcoming from '(the coroner and other court 1 proceedings. ? ( "It is particularly distress'■ing when death results from l 'the activities of a police force which is traditionally unarm zed and which has recourse *I to the use of firearms only L under strict rules designed !to reduce the risk of fatal • I injury. “The record of the Neu Zealand police in the use of ' firearms has been good, but the Taumarunui shooting. ' following as it does other ■ fatal shootings, gives cause ' for serious concern. The I questions which need to be (investigated are whether the present police rules governing the use of firearms provide adequate safeguards to members of the public and (whether the events at Tau(marunui suggest that these rules have been departed I from in any significant I manner.”
