Horses killed in blaze

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) ALORTON (Illinois), Feb. 25. Sixty-five horses have been killed in a fire that raced through a long, wooden horse bam at a race track near Alorton on Tuesday. The horses died in a blaze in a barn at Cahokia Race Track, a trotting track where the racing season is currently underway. Many of the horses were so badly burned that they had to be destroyed by track veterinarians, according to a track steward. About 60 horses escaped the blaze, although many horses were still running loose and an exact count on casualties had not been made.

No estimate on the value of the horses was available. No cause for the fire had been determined, although the State Fire Marshall’s office was called in to investigate.
