Kevin Ryder off to U.S.
The Yaldhurst trainer, Kevin Ryder, will leave Christchurch on Monday on his eighth visit to the United States. This time he will campaign a team of 10 horses, six of which have been secured in Western Australia.
Last year Ryder raced a team of eight horses he bought in Western Australia and from 13 starts they gained seven wins, three seconds, and a third. ‘T didn’t race them all,” said Ryder, “but sold them after 1 had qualified them.” Ryder plans to race all 10 horses he is taking over this time, “but if people want to buy them they will be for sale.” he said.'
Ryder is taking the promising young trotter, Roman
Senator, and the maiden pacer, John Redmond, which he bought from the Westport trainer, Keith Powell, after he had been placed in his only two starts on the West Coast late in December. Delvin Scott and Time are being taken over on behalf of the Invercargill trainer, Gil Shirley
The Western Australian horses include Benambra Bin. which has a mile record of 2:2, and Travis Image, which has a record of 2:2.3. The Australian horses will travel from Sydney in an aircraft which will pick up the remainder of the team in Auckland. They will be accompanied by Barry Neill, of Kumeu. who has made earlier trips to the United States and has driven winners there, and Ryder’s son, Francis, who will return home after a few weeks. Ryder said that he intends being awav for four or five months. He will start his team at Freehold Raceway, New Jersey, before moving on to other tracks.
