Newcomer in team
A 19-year-old left-handed batsman who gained national Brabin and Rothmans tournament selection earlier this season, Bruce Edgar, has been included in the Wellington squad for the Shell series cricket match against Canterbury, which begins at Lancaster Park tomorrow.
The 12 players named by the Wellington selectors also include Evan Gray, a leftarm spinner and middleorder batsman who appeared in the first two games of the series and was twelfth man for the remainder of the opening round, and Toiw Vaikvee, a leg-spinner Who has yet to find a permanent place in the provincial side.
John Morrison will captain Wellington for the first time in first-class cricket, in the absence of Grahame Bilby, who is not available. Mike Coles, formerly one of the pace bowlers, has lost his position. The 12 players from which the team will be selected are:— Stu Cater, Ewan Chatfield, Jeremy Coney, Edgar, Gray, Mike Harris, Morrison, Graham Newdick, John Ross, Bruce Smith, Robert Smith, Vaikvee.
