Service charges may increase

Underground electricity cable charges for inew subdivisions should be boosted sharply, the iChristchurch City CounIcil’s public utilities committee said yesterday.

The committee recommended a new charge of $135

a section for the entire Municipal Electricity Department area, because of rising costs. The present Charge is $55 in the city and $64 in county areas served by the M.E.D.

The M.E.D.’s general manager (Mr J. P. Shelley) said the charges were last increased in 1970. ! In a few subdivisions in hilly areas the charges may be increased by $75 because of higher excavation costs. Charges should be adjusted annually in the future to cover labour and material costs, the committee said. o The committee also recommended new waterworks fees and charges from April 1. Water connections now costing $5O would be raised to $6O. Builders’ fees would not change up to a permit value of $lOO,OOO. but they would rise from $5 to $4O for some more expensive projects. Rates for projects from $200,000 to $400,000 would remain unchanged.
