“Hulks” on street
Sir, — Could the Ministry of Transport explain why, as citizens travel over the Montreal Street crossing into the once-proud borough of Sydenham, they are met by excess vehicles belonging to the wrecking company on the comer, parked on the public roadway, seven days a week, in Hazeldean Road and Montreal Street. All are an eyesore. These hulks are now parked in a contractor’s property across the road, and since January 18 have been parked on property in Hazeldean Road owned by the Railways Department. Why has this firm, already’ warned to clear the area in 1975, taken over more of the public roadway, and even some of the footpath without reprisal from City Council or the Ministry although their staff travel past every day? Why has not the Civic Pride Committee taken action? Businesses should not be allowed to inflict these eyesores on our environment. — Yours, etc.,
M. O’NEILL. February 1, 1976. [Mr J. H. Gray, Town Clerk, replies: “The properties referred to are zoned Industrial 4 in the Council’s District Scheme, and the wrecking of motor vehicles is a permitted use in the zone. The very nature of this type of business often produces an untidy yard. It should also be pointed out that the building on the south-west corner of Hazeldean Road and Montreal Street is set back from the Hazeldean Road frontage. Consequently, what appears to be part of the footpath is actually private property.”] j
