ADDINGTON MARKET Most breeding ewes again easier

Most breeding ewes were again easier in value at the Addington market yesterday. With good harvesting weather prevailing, the sale was followed by much smaller buying galleries. Wether iambs were the exception to the trend. They bad a good demand throughout. particularly the lines of Perendales from the West Coast. The store sheep yarding was again large. It numbered 33X110 bead, and consisted of 14,040 adult sheep. 8300 two-tooth ewes, $755 wether lambs, and 4915 ewe lambs Store lambs Wether lambs had another very satisfactory sale, but ewe lamb taiues were again easier. Inis weeks yarding of almost ll.uoo head included a fair selection ot Perendale iambs from the Wesi Coast. These were again well, grown and in forward order. Quality in the fine woolled sei ] eetlon of lambs was not neariv] as good as usual. Many of the lambs were in hard condition, and while these continued to fetch reasonably good money, the demand on any forward lambs was so much better. The best of the Perendale lines reached $lO, and there were few sales at below $B. Straightbred Romneys sold to $9.80. The level of values for the Corriedale and halfbred lambs was probably not as high this week, but this was a reflection of the quality. The best of them reached $9; otherwise the average run of wether lamb sold at about $7.50 to 58.30, with light and plain at 56 to $7.10.

Ewe lambs generally had a realistic sale, with values anything up to a dollar a head easier on the average class of lambs. The yarding included a big selection of Corriedales and Perendales, and there were more Romnejs than usual.

The tone of the sale can be Judged by toe fact that some buyers who felt that wether lambs were beyond their idea al values were able to supplement their purchases with ewe lambs.

Not many ew e lambs reached or bettered $lO. and with many sales at $7.50 to $B, they were barely up to wether lamb rates. One of the top sales of the day was $10.50 for the best of a line of woolly Romneys from a Marlborough vendor.

Sales of store lambs included: Wethers.—P. R. Henderson fPamassusi, 400 Corrledaie and Down Cross at $7.90 to $9.15; T. and J. Barrett (Lewis Pass), 430 halfbreds at $5.40 to $8.90; W. G. and S. E. I This week’s buving gallery was much smaller than tn recent w Teks, and buyer's limits were, with an odd exception, lower. Generally, values were back by SI to $1.50 a head on last week’s rates. The $2O mark was reached once, and very few of the remainder exceeded SlB.

A large proportion of the yarding sold at $l4 to $l6, but in spite of this lower range, there was a sound floor to the market of about $l2, or the equivalent of young wether price. Sales of two-tooth ewes included:—

Kotare Downs, Ltd (Fernside), 77 Perendales at $15.80; M. J. Foley Teddington), 109 Romneys at $15.50; D. D. McKay (Hanmer Springs'. 146 Romneys at $15.20 to $l6; M. A. .$13.90 to $15.70; N. J. Schaffer I (Sefton), 36 Corriedales at $l5. Adult sheep ' Like the two-tooth market, the -adult breeding ewe market was easier. The yarding of 14.000 head included a good selection of annual draft lines, a number of them from the Marlborough east coast. The market opened before a small gallery, with buying power limited, but there was some improvement as selling progressed. Generally, however, the market was fully SI a head back on last week's rates. A line of annual draft ewes from the east coast fetched the

] top price ui $l5, but this was : an isolated price for fine-woolled i ewes. A few of the top pens oi 1 the good annual drafts reached i 51.2, out otherwise, good soundmouthed ewes were selling at 1559 to 510.50. Useful oue-year ewes sold in the $7 to $7.50 range, with aged ewes down to $5, or roughly freezing value. This week’s y >rding again included a good selection of annual draft Romneys, but as with the Corriedales and halfbreds, they were easier. A wellregarded line from Little River fetched the top price of $14.20; otherwise values were in line with those paid for the finer breeds. A line of almost 1700 Perendale ewes from two Lands and Survey developnmt blocks on the West Coast had a good sale on the day with nrices ranging from §9.50 to $12.80. Among sales of younger ewes was a pen of early-shorn threeshear Perendales. offered as capital stock, at $l6. Sales of adult ewes included:— Estate E. S.
