$1550 found in car—police

A man who was charged with robbing an attendant at Anderson’s Auto centre of more than $7OOO, has been committed to the Supreme Court for trial.

Messrs J. R. Harris and H. A. R. Tullet, Justices of the Peace, found that a prima facie case had been established after the taking depositions ended in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Mr K. N. Hampton appeared for the defendant, who was allowed bail.

When the police searched the defendant’s car they found a cardboard box containing $l5OO hidden in the boot, the Court was told.

Detective Constable W. W. Bishop told the Court that on December 17, he and several other detectives went to the defendant’s work premises and searched his car. The money was found in the spare wheel. The boot lining hid the box from immediate view.

A bag containing $5O was found inside the car. The defendant had told the police the money belonged to the

Canterbury Rugby League Association. When the defendant was searched, $l5OO was found in his pocket.

Whpri asked where he got the money from, he had replied that he got it from the Commercial Bank of Australia. He had said he often carried large sums around with him. said Detective; Constable Bishop.

The defendant told the police he was nowhere near the service station the night it was robbed. He said he watched television until about 8 p.m. and then went out to sign up some new rugby league players. He got home about 1 a.m. He told the police, “There’s no-one who could say where I was on that night.”
