The scene on the Christchurch Bowling Club’s green during the final rounds yesterday of the club’s centennial sponsored tournament. Christchurch, the oldest bowling club in Canterbury and the second oldest in New Zealand, staged a three-day tournament as part of its celebrations. More than 90 teams, from all over the South Island, took part and the winning four was Kevin Darling’s Linwood entry, with Kevin Smith, Andy Hamilton, and Jim Kelly. In the final, Darling beat Arthur Stapleton (Shirley), 21-14. The other placegetters were: lan Scott (Dallington), 3, Frank Cornelius (Christchurch Centre), 4, Allan Roberts (Cashmere), 5, and Curly Lions (Linwood), 6.
Golf.— Wills, Limited, has joined Consolidated Press in the joint sponsorship of the $158,000 Australian Open at the Australian Golf Club, in Sydney, on October 28-31. The two companies plan to make the open one of the leading events in the golfing world.
Golf Marilyn Smith of New Zealand, finished 17 strokes behind the winner, Kathy Whitworth (United States) in the 76th United States Ladies’ Professional Golf Association title in Florida.
