Strike delays champions

The two Commonwealth Games representatives, Susan Burnside and Grant Anderson, who failed to compete in the Canterbury track and field championships on Saturday, were victims of the air traffic control strike in Sydney. They had flown to Sydney last Wednesday for a few days’ holiday and had been scheduled to arrive back on Saturday in plenty of time for the second day of the championships. Instead, they did not get back until Sunday night. Anderson, who had won

the 200-metres title the previous Saturday, would have been a strong contender in the 100 metres and Miss Burnside was favoured to win the long jump and 100 metres hurdles titles. Both have been included in the Canterbury team for the New Zealand championships next month.
