University plans to spend $10m building

' li The university has submitted plans for the new law; building, which will include, a law library, to the Univer- i sity Grants Committee as!
| part of its plan to vacate 'floors progressively in the James Hight library-arts 'building as the main library! requires extra space. Approval will also be! i sought from the committee I for extensions to Christichurch College to provide for 78 extra beds. These will be >shared between the traditional hall of residence plan, (providing 28 beds, and flats. New buildings are also
planned for the accountancy, business administration, political science, classics, ohilosophy, and economics departments when they vacate their places in the James Hight building.
Planning is well advanced for a seventh-floor extension to the zoology building and for extensions to the modern language department to cater for Asian studies and Maori studies. The Edward Percival marine laboratory at Kaikoura will also be extended.
Long-term planning will now begin for two, and possibly three, new lecture theatres. These will be connected by a movable wall so that they can be converted into a large auditorium with a stage between. A boiler may also be included in the long-term plans Jto provide heat for the I buildings, which will also i include the new School of ! Fine Arts.
