Fish to cost more on Friday

f.X Z. Pre** Association> • i WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. Retail fish prices would rise between 4c and 15c per lb on Friday, the Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr AdamsSchneider) said today. In a statement, Mr AdamsSchneider said prices for the most popular fish species had not been adjusted since May, 1974. "During this period, fishermen’s aggregated cost of fuel and gear, such as ropes and nets, has risen by as much as 54 per cent.” he said. “Because of the operation of the price freeze regulations, wholesalers were not able to increase their own prices to recoup anv increases in costs.” The Minister said the fishing industry was the only sector in the economy that had been required to absorb increases of this order for so long, without relief. "The increases now authorised are intended to correct this anomaly, and also to recoup the latest increase in the price of fuel, effective from mid-December, 1975,” he said. The full increases in wholesale prices will be, passed to the fishermen or boat owners.
