Two cases of serum hepatitis

Two cases of serum hepatitis were reported in the Christchurch health district last week. The disease was different from infective hepatitis, but was just as capable of causing death in some cases, said the Deputy Medical Officer of Health (Dr J. G. Tees).

He said it could be transmitted in a variety of ways, including the use of hypodermic syringes, tattooing, dental extraction and. according to recent research, sexual contact.

In the past, Dr Tees said, many cases of serum hepatitis were diagnosed as infective hepatitis. He said the incidence of the disease was not increasing, but more cases of serum hepatitis were being accurately diagnosed.

Other notifiable disease in the Christchurch health district for the week ended Saturday, February 21, were infective hepatitis (4), pulmonary tuberculosis (2), and salmonella (3).
