Rugby tour of South Africa

Sir, — I am writing to congratulate the four church leaders who have protested to the New Zealand Rugby Football Union against the proposed tour of South Africa by the New Zealand team. Truly, the growth of apartheid in South Africa is a form of oppression that Christians are unable to ignore and cannot condone. Rugby is sold as a charac-ter-building exercise, but it is building a warped character when it refuses to aid the cause of the underprivileged. We, therefore, as a privileged society cannot believe that fair play is taking place. We cannot encourage any situation in Which men, women, and children — as much children of God, as we claim to be — are in any way oppressed. — Yours, SADIE HAYMAN. February 20, 1976.
