Junior pursuit team impressive in cycling

The Canterbury junior (pursuit team is set fair jto regain the national ■ title it last won at Kew Bowl three years ago. At last evening’s track icycling meeting at Denton .Park, the impressive junior I squad went an extremely, (good smin. I.6sec. which ! would have been nudging the 'national record two years ago. The juniors were always ■ ahead of the seniors and after la slightly slow start, stepped iup to regular 30sec. laps. The lyounger team won by 4|sec.l but the senior team was with-] out Blair Stockwell and Pauli Jesson, its two strongmen. The outstanding individual riders of the evening were Kim Reid, one of the Junior team, and the big young novice. Gavin Sutherland.

Reid, in both the heat and final of the kilometre, led out strongly and held on well to win that race. Then he won the points race, principally with a withering last lap again, but was put out of the 1600 m by a broken spoke. There was a surprise victory by Lester Vette in that race when, led out by Paul Brydon. lie cruised in with Brydon holding on for second.

Reid also finished the best of the bunch in the 8000 m but Chris Hogan had already gone away to an easy solo victory

Sutherland once again showed be could be a real force in the championships at Kew Bowl with two paralysing finishes. He came round the outside of the novice 600 m field at startling pace to win, but an even better effort was in the “Aces” 400 m.

Standing up the leaders by about four lengths as they entered the straight. Sutherland again showed his great speed over the last 40m. He also took a great first tap in the Italian pursuit which set his team up for a time only o.2sec off the track record.

Andrew Haltaway. one of the most improved novices, iiad his track season brought to an abrupt end when he crashed with 700 m of tiie novice scratch race left to fide. He had a broken collar-bone and was taken to hospital Results:—
