ATHLETICS Impressive 100m win by D’Arcy

(By

ROD DEW)

Two superb runs by the Australian-based New Zealand sprinter, l>aurie D’Arcy, and some outstanding- pole vaulting by an unexpected visitor from the Australian Box Hill club, Andy Stewart. were among the outstanding features of the Canterbury inter-, club track and fieldmeeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday. D’Arcy, who has returned to New Zealand for six weeks in a bid to qualify for the team to contest the' Montreal Olympics later this year, comfortably won the 100 metres "m an impressive wind-assisted 10.5 sec, the fastest time recorded on the [track this season. Later in the day, he was i * even more impressive in' ; winning the senior . 200! [metres in 21.1 sec, only three-! I tenths of a second outside the [Olympic qualifying time and ■;his best run this season. The. wind assistance was just above the allowable maximum. “That, was fairly satisfactory considering it was virtually a solo effort,” said D’Arcy afterwards. “If there had been someone to push me on the bend 1 might have been able to do better. But it is about what I expected.” D’Arcy, who comes from Timaru and is a former Canterbury representative, had the satisfaction of equalling the provincial 100 metres record and bettering the 200 metres record. Behind him in the longer

- sprint. Mike Garty (High School , Old Boys) and Bxian Ford (TechI nical), were both drawn out to good times. Both recorded 22.2 > sec, but Ford, who stumbled and > went sprawling right on the line, was credited with third behind • Garty. I The New Zealand Commonwealth Games- sprinter. Grant ■ Anderson (Old Boys), and his . club-mate, Jeff Bailey, restricted their activities to 400 metres be- , i cause of the risk of aggravat- - . ing minor injuries in the more! explosive sprint. They claimed I . j the first two places [ Stewart’s pole vaulting was as [ I impressive as it was unexpected. IHe won the senior event with 'la height of 4.75 metres (16ft lin) I before narrowly missing three attempts at 4.90 metres. No New Zealand vaulters have achieved [such heights. The New Zealand resident and national records stand at 4.70 metres to the credit of Peter Tracy (Waikato). Another Australian, Errol Mustafa, cleared 4.00 metres, but this was only good enough for ' third. Mike Ritchie (Toe H) recorded a vault of 4.20 metres to claim a well deserved second place. , Competing in the junior pole i vault, Keiran McKee (Toe H) also I cleared 4.20 metres. "ATHLETE" AWARD 1 The first 200 ft throws at Queen ) i Elizabeth Park for some time , I came in the senior men’s javeJ lin. Michael O’Rourke (Hastings) [won the event with a fine throw l of 66.23 metres (217 ft 7in) and > Rod McMillan (Cashmere) proved a worthy challenger, recording a ' career-best 61.44 metres (201 ft ■ 7Jin). McMillan was later named as the Farmers’ “Athlete of the Week” for his effort. The award is open only to Canterbury com- ' petitors. i The New Zealand 100 and 200 > metres women's champion, , Penny Hunt, of Wellington did not arrive in time to warm up ! properly for the short sprint, ; so she did not start. And because of the lack of strong female competition in the 200 • metres, she elected to sprint ■ against the C grade men. There were more than a few red faces among the men when she stormed through to finish third in the good time of 24.25ec. The 100 metres was won by

Susan Burnside (Technical* in 12.3 sec. She also won the long jump with an excellent leap of 6.03 metres. One of the outstanding performers of the day was in the lower age grades—l7-year-old Peter Dyer (Cashmere >. He won the junior javelin with a throw of 59.08 metres—just outside the junior record, but 66 centimetres better than his under 18 record. He also won the junior shot (13.01 metres) and bettered I his own Canterbury under 18 long jump record with a splendid jump of 7.00 metres (22ft HJ.in). Unfortunately, wind assistance ruled this out as far as official recognition was concerned. The .senior mens long jump went to the experienced Warren Jowett (University -Shirley . now approaching top form after a slow start to the season. He recorded 6.94 metres to push such accomplished jumpers as Mene Mene (Technical), Roger Knaggs (Technical) and Dragan Ivanov (Technical) into the minor placings. “That fooled 'em," a smiling Jowett said afterwards. Wayne Lambert, running in the colours of the Dunedin Ariki club, proved too good for his rivals in the 1500 metres. He entered the final lap with a huge lead and never looked like being caught, stopping the watches at 3min 53.25ec. The New Zealand cross-country representative, John Sheddan (Olympic), won a sprint finish with the Canterbury 1500 metres champion. Frank Brookes (Technical), fox- second place. He recorded 3min 54.75ec. Brian. Rhodes (UniversityShirley) looked very strong in winning the senior 800 metres in the good time of Imin 51.5 sec from Warren Sheddan (Olympic. The 5000 metres proved an easy win for the marathon specialist. Kevin Hamilton (Technical). He recorded 14min 22.65ec. Valerie Young (Technical) was a comfortable winner of the women’s discus, this time with a good throw of 45.18 metres. Second was her club-mate. Pauline Flynn, with 30.94 metres.
