Stud ewes in good demand
('‘The Press" Special Service > | PALMERSTON NORTH Ewes met a generally strong inquiry at the national sale of Suffolk and SouthSuffolk sheep at Feilding, but the demand for rams was more selective. Only the best of the SouthSuffolk rams were wanted. The average for six sold at auction was $233. Mereoak Farm (Ashburton) topped the market with one ram at $4OO, the buyer being 1. Brandon, of Bulls. Fifty-eight South-Suffolk ewes averaged $4O. with top; price of $6O going to T. M. Rowe (Rongotea). Pure Suffolk ewes sold to $2lO, this being paid by Mrs D. Finlayson (Invercargill), for a single ewe from J. S. Hammond (Marton). Mrs Finlayson purchased a fur-
I ther five ewes from the same vendor at $l7O to $2OO. All told, 78 Suffolk ewes averaged $lO2. Leading averages included, J. S. Hammond. 10 ewes, $153; R. J- and M. A. Burrows (Cui verden), five ewes, 'sl3l; C. Burrow’s (Culvertlen), three ewes, $140; R. D McKilvie (Rongotea ), 10 ewes. $l2l. Pure Suffolk rams met keen competition. Most of the betiter quality sheep sold at $5OO |to $750. The top price was 'obtained for a sheep from W. ■J. and M. A. Symes (Ashburi ton), the purchaser being R. |J. Galpin (Marton). Mereoak Farm (Ashburton), obtained the best average for rams. $525. Other averages included J. S. Hammond (Bulls). $475; 1 M. B Rowe, $525; and W. .1 and M. A. Symes. $437.
