Ecuadorean President resigns

.N.Z.P.A .Reuter—Copyright J

QUITO. January 11

General Guillermo Rodriguez Lara today announced his resignation as President of Ecuador. “I have asked to be relieved of my administrative mission,” General Rodriguez Lara said in a t’our-page statement to the press.

The resignation of General Rodriguez Lara, who seized power in a coup in 1972, followed a prolonged campaign to force him from office. His 11-man Cabinet resigned on January 2, and on Friday he handed over responsibility for internal security to the armed forces.

General Rodriguez Lara hoped to complete a normal four-year Presidential term, which would have ended on February 16. But there were growing protests against his Presidency in the last few weeks, including violent demonstrations in several cities.
