Referendum on abortion likely
(N.Z.P A Reuter — Copyright) ROME, January 11.
A referendum on abortion in Italy becomes more likely after it was declared constitutional on Friday. The Constitutional Court decided that a referendum, which first became possible after abortion-law reformers succeeded in collecting half a million authenticated signatures, would not contravene a constitutional provision which bans “incitement to practices against procreation.” A bill to legalise abortion is now before Parliament and is due to be drafted by the Chamber of Deputies (Lower House) this week. If the bill becomes law, the referendum will be forestalled.
