Malaysian can stay in N.Z.
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. Chan Boon Pian, the Malaysian art conservation student, has won his battle to remain in New Zealand. Last November Chan was told he must leave the country by the end of December. Representations were made to the Immigration Division of the Labour Department on behalf of Chan by Mrs E. E. McMillan, the former Labour member for Dunedin North, and the Mayor, Mr J. G. Barnes. The Immigration Division told Chan that he would have to show that he could not get a job in art conservation in Malaysia and that there was a permanent job for him in New Zealand. An offer of a permanent
job as a junior art conservator at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery sealed Chan’s qualifications to apply for permanent residence in New Zealand. But Chan was still told that his applicaiton may not be granted. Chan’s future remained in the balance until he received a telegram recently from the Immigration Department telling him that his application was being proceeded with. Chan said he was very pleased at the news although he said his application for permanent residence had only been partially confirmed and was not yet official. “I will just keep my fingers crossed and hope everything goes smoothly from now on,” he said. Chan plans to apply for New Zealand citizenship when he has been a permanent resident for the necessary three years.
