Protected trees
Sir, — It is interesting to note that the protected walnut tree on the site of the Canterbury Wine and Spirit Company’s property on Papanui Road has disappeared. Like the attractive house behind which it grew, it is now just a picture in a scrapbook. Where the responsibility for this action lies is not clear, but since it was public knowledge that the tree was protected, the owners of the property could surely have made concerted efforts to insure that it was retained. It is to be hoped that the manner in which the company has gone about developing its liquor outlet is reflected in the amount of patronage it receives. In other words, a company which shows so little regard for local feelings may find there is little local interest in the goods it sells. — Yours, etc., BARBARA LEE. January 9, 1976.
