Pine 121 to Mrs Marett
(N.Z. Press Association > AUCKLAND. The Otago batswoman, Carol Marett. found her best form yesterday and scored a chanceless 121 against Auckland. She I was at the crease for I only 136 minutes, and her total included 191 boundaries. Mrs Marett’s innings was the highlight of the first day’s play in the final round of the national women’s cricket tournament, sponsored by Rothmans, for the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield. Hers is the only century scored so far in the series, and follows scores of 72 and 40 which she compiled in the previous match against Wel- : Hngton. The other match in the present round is between Wellington and North Shore. Canterbury, which is at present leading the points table, has the bye. The Wellington - North Shore clash began as the vital match of the round. An outright win to either team, with maximum bonus points, could have edged them ahead of Canterbury. With 67 overs already bowled in the North Shore first innings, there is now no possibility of Canterbury being overtaken. Wellington was dismissed!
for a modest 173 in its first innings, and at stumps, North Shore had replied with 147 for the loss of six wickets.
The Otago openers, Bridgit 57 for the first wicket, which Robinson and Frances Broad, started brightly and put on set the stage for Carol Marett’s superb innings. At stumps, Auckland was well on the way to overtaking the Otago first innings total of 218. They had reached 170 with four wickets still to fall. The 16-year-old Taieri High School girl, Alison Buckley, was again successful in taking early wickets for Otago with her fast bowling, including a brilliant caught and bowled to dismiss Fay Hedges. Both matches, and the tournament, end today.
