More than 150 people attended the 49th South Island W.E.A. Summer School which ended at Arthur’s Pass yesterday. This was a 50 per cent increase on recent years, the director of the school (Mr H. 'Evis.pn) said. The camp is an; annual event organised byi the Workers Educational As- ; sociation. The theme of this year’s, school was “New Zealand 2000 A.D.” “We tried to encourage people to look to the future, with some clear idea of New; Zealand’s future,’’ Mr Evis.on jsaid. A number of recommendations resulting from discussion were passed at the final, session of the school. They] Tailed for: reconsideration of the West Coast beech forest scheme; opposition to the! Mount Davey coal export I scheme; restructuring of financial aid for deprived children; and freely available family planning advice. It was also agreed that the Government should ratify the United Nations proposal for a “nuclear-free zone in the Pacific.” Among the guest speakers at the summer school was Professor P. Mclntosh, chairman of the U.N.E.S.C.O. working party on mass, media. sport and inter-i national understanding.
