Bad error aid to N.Z.

(Special Crspdt. N.Z P A.) SYDNEY. A bad navigation error probably cost New South Wales the Southern Cross yachting cup, which has been won by New Zealand by a margin of 28 points. Mercedes IV, the N.S.W. team yacht skippered and navigated by her experienced owner Ted Kaufman, missed Fasman Island by more than 30 miles. The yacht had to make up the distance with some hard windward work to the entrance of the Derwent River, instead of making an easy reach across Storm Bay. Tasman Island marks the “corner” which the yachts must “turn” at the southernmost point of the Sydney-Hobart race, before turning north for the finish. Mercedes had been second, third, or fourth in most of the computer projections for the 630-mile race, until the final morning. She lost more than three hours as a result of the error, finishing 49th in the race, and only 22nd among the 33 cup yachts, 63 points behind the winner. o'
