Few gliders finish

Despite good, stable gliding conditions oji the first day of the 19/6 national gliding championships at Matamata Airfield yesterday, only four of the 49 competitors succeeded in completing the set task. Open and standard classes were set a course. Waharoa, Orini, Arapuni, Waharoa —- a distance of 135 km. It was the 35 contestants in this class that were the most successful, as four completed the course. The remaining 31 landed out, as did all 14 contesting the sports-class competition of 136 km — Waharoa, Tahuna, Arapuni, Waharoa. Open and standard class.—R. Georgeson (Canterbury). 3hr 4 min.. I. Pryde (Auckland) 3:5, D. Warrell (Upper Valley), 3:6, P. Higginbotham (Wellington) 3:26. The late hours at which most contestants returned ,to the airport made scoring impossible. The championships will finish on January 17.
