CANNED LAUGHTER Is there any logical reason! for the canned laughter and! applause on TV? Even out-! side scenes and cartoons have' it. Unlike advertisements, it! cannot be ignored. Surely, every action and remark does! not warrant the exact and! same amount of braying from! the trained hyenas. Not only overseas programmes are inflicted with it, but New Zealand ones also; the prerecorded “Happen Inn,” for one. Why does Merv Smith instruct his audience when to applaud, and in Selwyn Toogood’s performances why is so much time devoted to: audience reaction? When one’ has heard one crowd of cheer- ’ ing people one has heard! the lot. J. C. KING. I
