Whitianga search called off

(N.Z. Press Association/ HAMILTON, Jan. 2. The police today abandoned their search for the bodies of three young persons still missing after the Whitianga boating accident which claimed six lives this week. After combing the shoreline of the Coromandel beach resort and several off-shore islands in the last three days, the police today announced that they would now only check on reported sightings.

“We have run out of places to look,” a police spokesman said. Six young persons aged between 17 and 24 were aboard a runabout which overturned about 24km from Whitianga on Tuesday. Three bodies have been found.

The three persons still missing are: Tony Davison, who is in his early 20s, a farmer, of Coroglen; Miss Patricia Latham, aged 17, of Cook Drive, Whitianga; and Darryl Amies, in his early 20s, of Upper Hutt.
