Hailes skates to brilliant win in N.Z. race

George Hailes (Hastings), tall and lean, showed himself a great roller skater when he powered away with the glamour 10.000 m senior title for the sixth time in seven years at the New Zealand roller-skating championships at Canterbury Court last evening.

The only time Hailes lost the title was to his fellow New Zealand representative, Colin Birchall (Masterton) — and it was Birchall who tucked in behind Hailes when he applied pressure with 20 of the 100 laps remaining in last evening’s race. At this point, Hailes, who had done much of the pacework, had split the field to the extent that only Birchall and Colin Harvey (Wellington) represented any threat. But the unrelenting Hailes increased his tempo. Harvey dropped away, and Birchall, back now bowed, was 10m behind with 10 laps to go. Birchall, smaller in stature than Hailes, lacked nothing in courage, but was unable to make leeway on the flying Hailes, and was almost 50m behind at the finish. Harvey, unable to stay with the two leaders over the last 10 laps, skated on courageously for third, ahead of Robert Green (Hawke’s Bay), who had already won laurels earlier in the evening. DANCE PAIRS TITLE

Green, partnered by his sister, Annette Green, gave a fine performance to win the senior dance pairs title. There were only three pairs entered, but the free skating exhibition — to their own music — was of exceptional quality, and the three couples drew much applause. The young Auckland pair, Brian McKay and Robyn Sillick, also gave a fine exhibition of free dancing, and fully extended the more experienced Green combination. Gregory Hollows (Manawatu), a New Zealand representative at the world artistic titles, won the men’s figure skating title for the first time, although he struck two doughty opponents in Warren Latchford (Mt Wellington) and William Hancock (Hawke’s Bay). 800 m HEATS The Manawatu brothers, Brian and Stephen Carwell-

Cooke, will have a big say in the final of the senior men’s 800 m on Monday, judging by their wins in heats yesterday.

Brian Carwell-Cooke returned the fastest time of the four heats when he took adavntage of an early fall which affected his other rivals and won impressivley by sm. George Hailes (Hastings), who had to leap in the air to avoid a fallen rival, closed on Carwell-Cooke towards the finish, and he will be an obvious threat in the final. John Yorke (Hastings) led throughout to beat the international. Colin Birchall (Masterton), in the second heat; and Stephen Carwell-Cooke was easily superior in the fourth.

Graeme Campbell (Hastings) had to come from the rear in the other heat, passing the South Canterbury skater. Calvin Gabites. on the last lap.

Barry Green clocked the fastest time in the four intermediate heats over the same distance, his time comparing favourably with the senior heats. Green. Murray Ma-: carthy (Rollerdrome), and John Dugdale (Hawke’s Bay) should have an interesting race in the final. ROLLER HOCKEY

Mark Urlich (Hastings) emerged as favourite for the junior boys’ 400 m title; and the juvenile 400 m final might be fought out between Paul Cole (Mount Wellington) and Dean Landreth (Rollerdrome). One of the favoured teams for the roller hockey title. Papatoetoe, had a surprise reverse when it lost its first match in the second division, to Masterton. It was a hardfought match, Masterton gaining the win by the odd goal in 11.
