Fires kill 40
The New Year death toll in home fires in America has risen to 40 — 21 of the victims being children — with the deaths of six people, four of them from one family, in an early morning fire at the home of Dr Donal Michalski, aged 47, a professor of music at the California State University. In addition to the professor, his wife, two children, and his secretary and her daughter all died in the blaze. — New York, January 1.
