Sports policy
Sir, — What a ridiculous sporting policy this weak Government has got. It states that “Every New Zealander should be free to have contact ... or play sport with anyone in the world.” This policy is built on a number of fallacies. These are: politics have no place in sport, and the corollary of no interference in sport; building bridges is better than building walls. This sporting policy is mainly directed at South African contacts. Let us look at one element in detail. Politics are in sport. It is artificial to break them apart. Here there are many examples.— National proposes to welcome officially the racially all-white South African softball team. Therefore, within two months it has broken a promise. In South Africa politics are in sport in an extreme and undesirable amount. — Yours, etc., G. DAVIDSON. December 31, 1975.
