The second seed. John Newcombe, survived a tough challenge from the young German, Rolf Gehring, to win through to the second round of the 885,000 Marlboro Australian open at Kooyong yesterday.
Gehring forced the defending champion to tiebreakers in the first and third sets before going down 7-6, 6-1, 7-6.
Earlier, the third and fourth seeds. Tony Roche and American Stan Smith, won their first round matches in straight sets. The only upset of the day was the defeat of the second women’s seed, Kerry Melville Reid, who was beaten in straight sets by a Swedish junior, Elizabeth Ekblom.
