First buyer for new boiler
Mason Anderson, Ltd. the 125-year-old Christchurch engineering firm which has been promoting a new coal-fired packaged boiler design spurred on by rises in the prices of alternative fuels, yesterday received its first order for a unit. The order for a $25,000 unattended boiler — which will produce 4001 b of steam and hour — came from an Auckland laundry company. I Company representatives; said they believed that the latest fuel-price increases were a real incentive to con-j vert to coal. Although the, boiler itself was more expen-j sive than those tired by oil or gas, companies using the “revolutionary design” could} realise savings in fuel costs, within 18 months, according; to Mason Anderson’s general manager (Mr D. J. Wiltshire). An unattended boiler would produce three times as much steam as a conven-j tional, attended coal-fired boiler. HEAT TRANSFER An important improvement on conventional designs was the high heat transfer through the boiler’s flow: tubes. The new boiler would usej about 5001 b of coal an hour.; A prototype was already, being manufactured at the company’s Woolston works. According to the company,} the fuel crisis of 18 months : ago brought a quick change to the works divsion. The previously-high demand for < oil and gas-fired boilers was i replaced by inquires for ; coal-fired boilers which!; could produce up to 30,0001 b of steam an hour. ji Orders were held for nine; such units, with inquiries fori< several others. i
