BLENHEIM. Dec. 17.
The man was only waving energetically, but the passing ferry put about after taking his actions for those of frantic distress.
The incident occurred in Tory Channel, Queen Charlotte Sound, yesterday.
The man’s daughter was on the rail ferry Ararnoana, which was going to Picton through the narrow channel. He went to the end of his jetty, to catch her attention with a piece of red bunting. The vessel stopped, , turned around, and ap- 1 proached the small bay and jetty until she was — even more frantically — signalled away. The ship was about 18 minutes late at Picton. “The bloke realised immediately what he had done. He was full of remorse, so I won’t mention his name,” said the harbourmaster (Captain D. I. Jamison). “He was wrongly using what could have been a distress signal.”
