Hitch-hikers warned

<N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 18. Hitch-hikers should be aware of a traffic regulation that every pedestrian walking along a road where an adequate footpath was available should keep to the footpath as much as is practicable, said a senior police officer today He was commenting on a statement by the Ministry of Transport’s traffic superintendent for the Wellington rural district (Mr K. Boyden) that it was not opposed to hitch-hikers and that, apart from motorways, they had as much right to be on the road as everyone else. People had, in fact, been prosecuted for not keeping to the footpath when there was one available, the police officer said.
