Professor R. H. M. Langer, Professor of plant science at Lincoln College, has been appointed the first assistant principal of the college. In submitting Professor i Langers nomination to the ! Lincoln College Council, the : principal (Professor J. D. Stewart) said he had been aware for some time that assistance was required in the detailed academic coordination of the college and in strengthening the link between the administration and college research activities. “In the academic field I see Professor Langer as having an executive function in the co-ordination work re- , quired as the college expands * in student numbers and in ;the variety and number of courses offered,” said Processor Stewart. The assistant principal will be chairman of the standing
committee of the professorial board, and will be responsible for co-ordination of the work of the four boards of studies. In research, Professor Langer will have a wideranging advisory role to assist the principal. Professor Langer will retain his position as head of the department of plant science. This appointment will not affect the position of vice-principal of thei college, held by Professor I. E. Coop, head of the department of anima] science. OTHER POSITIONS Professor Langer, since his 'arrival at Lincoln in 1959, ihas taken a keen interest inj [academic development. He has been chairman of ; the professorial board’s standing committee for the last 12 years. This committee is the watchdog of academic standards. He is also the chairman of the college’s research committee. Outside Lincoln, he is a member of the University Grants Committee’s research committee, chairman of the Wheat Research Committee, and chairman of the joint board of studies in environmental science, which coordinates the environmentalstudies work of Lincoln College and the University of Canterbury. Professor Langer is a council member of the Royal Society of New Zealand, chairman of the society’s committee for biological science, and was elected fellow of the Royal Society in 1972.
