G. N. DERBY OF $20,000

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. An added incentive to lure the country’s best three-year-olds to Alexandra Park on February 7 came with the stake for the Great Northern Pacing Derby being boosted to $20,000. This is a $3OOO increase on the stake the Auckland Trotting Club had hoped to provide for this season’s classic and almost certainly makes it the richest three-year-old. standardbred event ever staged in New Zealand. Last month, the New Zealand Derby, carried a $19,000 stake. The club has been able to increase the stake for the Derby as well as three other feature events by receiving a special grant of $5OOO from the Racing Authority. The other feature races this season to have their stakes boosted are: the New Zealand Messenger Championship, $13,000 (from $12,180); the New Zealand Juvenile Championship $BOOO ($7160); and the Rowe Cup §14,500 ($14,000).
