Minister’s view 'nonsense'
(N.Z. Press Association) The former Minister of Housing, Mr R. O. Douglas (Manukau) today attacked his successor, Mr Gair, saying that National was attempting to “get around” election promises. Mr Douglas described as "nonsense’’ statements made by Mr Gair last evening that available evidence had “confirmed his fears” that Labour had overcommitted itself in housing. “This is another attempt, to ‘con’ the public, and a weak excuse for not imple-| menting election promises in, the area of housing,” Mr!
Douglas said. “The public will , not let Mr Gair forget his election promises — for • example, to provide finance for unsold houses, or his promise of 85 per cent mortgage finance. “In Opposition, the sky was the limit. In office for two; days, and Mr Gair is attempt-; ing to blame the previous! Government for non-existent! over-expenditure;” Mr Douglas said that Mr. Gair was apparently “prom-; ising the building industry a! return to the 1967-68 bust period.” If Mr Gair went ahead' with the restrictions he • apparently wished to impose, ■production would drop and (“extensive unemployment • appear in the industry.” Mr 'Douglas said.
