Noodlum back with a winning run at trials

Noodlum, which went amiss on the eve of the New Zealand Cup, made a satisfactory return to trials racing at Addington Raceway yesterday.

After racing at the rear of the seven-horse field until the 800 m, he improved racing to the straight, took the lead without being pushed, and won with a lot in hand by three lengths.

The leaders took 3:27.2 for the 2600 m, the last 1600 m in 2:3.4, the last 800 m in 60.2, and the final 400 m in 30.2, Noodium’s times for those sections would have been slightly faster. Noodlum, which has been entered for races at the Auckland Cup carnival, which starts on Saturday week, looked to pull up well. He has obviously done a lot of work and could be ready for a bold showing in the Benson and Hedges National Pace on the first night of the meeting. Dreamy Morn, having his first start since joining Jim Dalgety’s team some months ago, put dash into his fnish into second place, clear of Gay Tennessee and Junior

Armbro, which shaded Living Doll. Bellman and Luther, rivals in the Roi I’Or Stakes at the Waimate meeting, finished first and fourth respectively in the race for three-year-olds. Bellman led for the last ,2000 m with Luther pocketed behind him. Luther was never in the clear and was full of running at the line. They were separated by Glentara, with American Chief making ground for fourth, ahead of Rebecca’s Pride. The pace was slack, the 2600 m taking 3:33.5, with the last 400 m in 32. .

Scribe (Scottish Command—Mooloo), from Bob Cameron’s team, won the first heat for two-year-olds in 2:43.8, with the last 800 m in 1:4.8. My One lost much ground and showed speed in the middle part. Brad’s Song made most of the pace and gained an easy win in the second heat. Kotare Vance and Scottish Heath dead-heated for second, clear of Rio Grande and the Waimate candidate, Winning Hostess, which was a little slow earlv. The last

800 m took 1:1.8, with the full 2000 m in 2:44.8. Nigel Craig, which is to resume racing at the Ashburton meeting on Boxing Day, showed that he had freshened up since the New Zealand Cup meeting when he won the main race for trotters. He started from the second line, took the lead with 1900 m to run, and was not afterwards at top to win by three lengths from Chickenman, which is to race at the Waimate meeting.

Nigel Craig trotted the 2600 m in 3:35.6, the last 800 m in 1:3.2, and the final 400 m in 30.6.

It was a splendid run on the part of Chickenman, which could easily surprise in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru.

Serendipity also trotted well to take third ahead of Vai’s Lass and Complete Circle, which is now being trained by Paul Gallagher. The smart three-year-old, Harvey Wilson, did well to finish seventh after meeting trouble at the start. If he receives a reasonable run he should go close to winning the C. D. Wilson Handicap at the Waimate meeting.

Vourvreter came with a solid run to win the second race for CO and Cl pacers in 3:39.9, with the last 800 m in 1:2.4. Miss Chase came on quite well for second, ahead of lan James and the fastfinishing Golden Miller, which was badly placed and had to come wide in the straight. Golden Miller was one'of several form horses to fail to obtain a start at the Waimate meeting. Rigid woir the other race for this class in 3:32.2, shading Taramatic, which began well from the unruly position. Taramatic could be a danger in the Dom Keyes Memorial Handicap at the Waimate meeting. Heathstock did better than Mendacious for third.

First Count gave his best showing for some time when he raced away with the event for C2 to C 4 pacers. He recorded 3:27.7 for the 2600 m, the last 800 m in 1:2.4. Kancho came on solidly for second, ahead of John Himself, Avenge and Kishmul. Esteban, which looks a top chance in the Waimate Cup, was pacing easily in seventh place, just ahead of Tudor Gold, which should be improved by the run. She has not raced this season, but showed good form last term in the North Island.
