Protest at omissions

i (X Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The Auckland Water Polo Board will officially protest at the omission of several of its players from the New Zealand team to play Australia in an Olympic Games qualifying series in Australia in February. Only one Aucklander is in the 15-man team anr mneed this week.

“Auckland has been very ponrl" treated in the national team selection, and we intend protesting most strongly to the New Zealand Water Polo Board." said the Auckland board’s chairman (Mr Geoff Knights). “Auckland proved at the annual national provincial invitation tournament in Wellington over Labour Weeken 1 that it is the second-best team in the country at present,” continued Mr Knights. “We hammered Wellington, and our only loss was a narrow one to Canterbury.

“Yet Wellington has six players in the national side, and Canterbury eight, while Auckland has only the one. A gross injustice has been done.”

Pointing out that two! [selectors are from Canterbury and the other is from Welllington, he called the choices [“complete parochialism.”
