Jim Tabak. easily the fastest l novice at present in Canterbury, underlined his speed with a Canterbury record time of 13sec,! surely the fastest by an under--16-year-old since Brian Hazeldine nearly 20 years ago. To show it was no fluke. Tabak went 13.3 sec in the final, but; only just held off Shane Smith. The other fast times were all over a kilometre. The national champion at the distance. Jacob Schriek. setting the pace i with a cracking time of Imin ; llsec in his heat. This time was only l.lsec out-* side the New Zealand record
for which Schriek was mainly responsible. and such was his effort, Schriek did not start in tlie final. In another heat. Frank Schaapveld set a Canterbury junior record of Imin 13.7 sec; Kim Reid clipped more than a -ecpnd from this time in the final but I’.is fast finish was onlv for fifth. Schriek was to figure In a disqualification at the end of the eyening when he burrowed through on the concrete verge at tlie finish of the 8000 m.
