Tomato crop

An Ashburton tomato grower, Mr Alan Fechney, was surprised to read in “The Press” yesterday of the Otaki grower whose crop was damaged by weedkiller. The story said that his 15,000 plants represented 6 per cent of the total outdoor crop in New Zealand. Mr Fechney said that on that basis, Ashburton supplied about 12 per cent of the crop, which he did not believe. A spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture in Christchurch said last evening that 15,000 plants could not possibly represent 6 per cent of the outdoor crop. He said the quantity mentioned would only cover about an acre and a half — hardly 6 per cent of the total.

Too much froth A British court has ruled that the head of froth on a glass of lager beer should not count as part of the measure: the Magistrates in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, fined a barman and a publican for serving short measure in two 10-ounce beers.
