No blitz on Chch drinkers

There is no suggestion that the Ministry’ of Transport will hold a blitz on drinking drivers in ChristChurch, according to the city traffic superintendent (Mr A. Goldsmith). Traffic officers in Christchurch were always on the lookout for drinking drivers, Mr Goldsmith said. “It is a serious offence, and we treat it as a serious offence, but there is no suggestion of a blitz here.” Between 15 and 20 traffic offence notices were given in Christchurch each week to drivers under the influence of drink. This figure was likely to rise at this time of year, said Mr Goldsmith, but the traffic officers were not going around looking for drunken drivers. “If we suspect somebody we go through the normal procedures.”
