Schools ’not being destroyed’
School buildings through-! out New Zealand are being! replaced for a number of reasons, including their failure, to comply with certain standards, but it is not true that* there is widespread destruc- i tion. according to the Depart-! ment of Education. The department was reply-! ing to a correspondent to I “The Press,’’ V. F. Wilkin-1 son. who asked about a new! earthquake code and the "de-I struction” of schools because! of this code. The department said build- ! mgs were not replaced be-; cause of their failure to meet; the requirements of new’ con-; struction. They may be re-! placed because they wereobsolete, unsuitable in loca-j tion, inadequate for their! purpose, or because of their j earthquacke risk. Only one such replacement! was planned in the Christ-1 church region before the end ! of the decade, the depart-| ment said. ‘“The Ministry of Works • and Development is respond sible for the structural ex-i amination of all Governmentowned buildings, including' older schools."
