! A Christchurch girl, Miss I Michele Reeves, of KirkI wood Intermediate school, I has won an essay com(petition run by the Taranaki, I Hawkes Bay . Canterbury, and Southland Education Boards. The competition entitled, “We should plant trees because. . . . ,” attracted a large number of entries. The judges. Professor P. J. McElvey, professor of forestry at the University of Canterbury, Mr J. O. Taylor, senior lecturer in horticulture at Lincoln College, and Mr J. S. Matheson, vicepresident of the New Zealand Nurserymen’s Association, chose Miss Reeves’s essay because it was neatly presented, factual, and gave [a full account of the value of trees to humanity. David Abbott, of Kaponga School, Taranaki, was second, and Sarah Read, of Highlands Intermediate School, Taranaki, third. Prize vouchers will be (awarded to the winners.
