Australian market firm in quiet trading
Australian stock exchanges ended the day on a steady note in quiet trading yesterday, although traders said the market reaction to the Liberal by-election win at Wagga was mixed because of the 12 per cent swing to Labour.
Among the industrials, Mercantile Mutual stood out, rising 112 c to 320 c after the 275 c a share bid by Australian Guarantee. Australian Guarantee itself eased 4c to 196 c. A.C.I. also stood out, fall- ; ing 17c to 138 c in reaction to .the substantial decline in its profit for the half-year. Gollin was cut back 1c at 20c and B. eased 2c to 708 c. The Wales, Hooker, C.U.8., Comalco, and 8.M.1. firmed, but the C.8.C., Jennings, C. Coles and Herald W.T. were among those to retreat. Mining issues B.H. South, M.1.M., Hamersley, Poseidon, Woodside-Burmah were marginally firmer. Utah was back at its best peak of 1000 c, after rising 4c. A.M.S., C.R.A., North 8.H.. Peko-Wallsend,
