Chch building costs lower

Building costs in Canterbury are among the lowest in the country, according to figures published in the latest issue of a construction journal. A survey puts Canterbury, Nelson and the West Coast as the cheapest regions. The comparisons are made in the December issue of “The New Zealand Building Economist.” The average cost a square metre for a standard, three-bedroom, 90 sq. m house in this region is $161.60. The average cost for an executive, three-bedroom, 110 sq. m house, is $218.80 a square metre.

Wellington is the most expensive area, with figures of $207.22 for a standard house and $254.62 for an executive house. The central North Island is next highest, followed by Auckland and the lower half of the South Island.

Indices for housing and commercial building costs are also published in the journal. These show a slight fall in the rate of increase of costs over the nine months to June. In the 18 months to June housing construction costs increased 29 per cent and commercial construction costs 27 per cent.
