Roads board to expand?
Christchurch city councillors want more information on a Wellington City Council proposal calling for the abolition of the National Roads Board and the setting up of a National Transport Board in its place.
Such a board would allocate money to both reading and public transport. Cr V. S. Buck yesterday called attention to recent comments by the Director of Reading (Mr F. A. Langbein), who said that the board would be vulnerable to criticism as long as it confined its attention to the construction and maintenance of roads. He said that it might be an advantage for the board to become more deeply involved in public transport, and perhaps expand the scope of works eligible for board subsidies. The Mayor (Mr H: G. Hay) said the board would need more Government financing if it were to take on expanded functions. Reading itself did not have a bright immediate future because of limits on funding. During a recent overseas tour, Mr Langbein noticed city restraints on private cars coupled with the encouragement of public transport.
Parking controls were seen by many as the best way to discourage the use of cars for commuter journeys.
