Plea for liquor law change

Press Association) AUCKLAND. A Lawyer made a strong plea in the Auckland Magistrate's Court yesterday for the removal of an anomaly in the law which makes it unlawful to allow the consumption of liquor tn unlicensed restaurants after 6 P-m. Mr G. Gotlieb, appearing for a city restaurateur. Geofftev Uren, said that a referendum m 1967 had voted for later closing of hotels, but the new legislation did not change the hours in which wme can legally be taken into an unlicensed restaurant The legal period remained from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"For seme reason that legislation has never been changed.” he said. ‘lt is ridiculous that you are still legally allowed to take a botlte «f wine into a restaurant between 9 a m. and 6 p.m. It was the peoples* decision that the law be changed.’

Mr Gotlieb said restaurant drinking was “the most civilised form of liquor consumption in New Zealand.” Mr W. J. Mitchell. S.M.. Indicated that although he was sympathetic, the law still stood. He fined Uren $2O on a charge of allowing unlawful consumption of liquor in an unlicensed restaurant.
