Uniformed litter man wanted
The future appointment of a uniformed litter officer for Christchurch was recommended in principle yesterday by the City Council’s health and general committee.
But the matter should be delayed until estimates time next year, after the existing Litter Act had been revised, to give the officer the power to arrest offenders, the committee decided.
At present, the law does not allow an officer to issue infringement notices or demand proof of identity. Such powers would help to offset the cost of an enforcement and education programme. An active anti-litter enforcement programme was necessary to deal with a small minority who were not responsive to other forms of persuasion.
